The Blackfyre family is a branch house of the Targaryens created when Aegon the Unworthy legitimized the bastard son Deamon he conceived with his sister Daena. Following the death of Aegon IV and Daeron’s coronation, Daemon sought to press his own claim to the throne and began the first Blackfyre Rebellion. Archmaester Vaegon, Jaehaerys’ last living son who had given up his claim when he became a maester, Prince Viserys Targaryen, and Laenor Velaryon, the grandson of Jaehaerys’ eldest son Aemon and son of his daughter Rhaenys.

Those who survive and manage to keep it together can be quite formidable, though. After the (ahem) tragic death of his first wife Rhea Royce, Daemon Targaryen married Laena Velaryon, the beautiful daughter of his first cousin Rhaenys. Due to Daemon’s um, misbehavior at court, they were forced into exile in Pentos, where they live with their twin daughters and fly around on their cool dragons Caraxes and Vhagar. Only the most relevant children in each generation are included, since fully outlining the dozens of rogue cousins, usurpers, minor monarchs, and temporary heirs would literally take longer than just watching the first episode. Viserys spent most of his life with Dany in the Free Cities, where they were smuggled as children to stay safe from Baratheon forces in the aftermath of the civil war known as Robert’s Rebellion. The rebellion took the Iron Throne away from the Targaryens; Viserys’ sole focus was on reclaiming that power.
Aegon “The Conqueror” Targaryen
In order to strengthen her claim to the throne, Rhaenyra plots to marry her uncle Daemon. They seem to share a mutual attraction and have become close over the years. Instead, Rhaenys (played by Eve Best) has to watch her cousin Viserys take the seat and settle for influencing affairs from the sidelines, as shrewd noblewomen in Westeros often do. She is married to Corlys Velaryon, a member of another noble Valyrian house and the king’s Master of Ships. They have a daughter and a son named Laena and Laenor (the Targaryens aren’t known for being super original with their names), the latter of which has a legitimate claim to the throne as a male descendant of the crown prince.
Daemon
He’s the only one of the Targaryen kids who hasn’t managed to bond with a dragon, which makes him a source of ridicule among the others. But while he may be afraid, he’s not a coward, and a pivotal moment in his childhood forms the basis of an epic lifelong rivalry between Aemond and the three Velaryon brothers, especially the middle brother, Lucerys. Aemond eventually rides the biggest, most fearsome dragon of all, Vhagar — but this victory, like most in Westeros, has a price. We first meet Laena at age 12 as she’s being offered in marriage by her parents to a mortified King Viserys. She thankfully fares better after that and winds up distinguishing herself as a dragonrider and noblewoman.
The majority of the Targaryens died out before the events of “Game of Thrones,” and their lineage nearly ended after Robert Baratheon took the Iron Throne with Robert’s Rebellion. For nearly the entire series, Daenerys Targaryen plotted to take back the crown and grew an army in the neighboring continent of Essos. However, in the series finale, Daenerys was killed by Jon Snow, who was revealed to be a long-lost Targaryen in a twist that fans of the novels had long predicted. King Viserys and Aemma Arryn were a lovely match — up until the point he allowed his maesters to perform a C-section without her consent. Baelon, the son Aemma died to deliver, only survived his mother for a few more hours, earning the mocking moniker “Heir for a Day” from Viserys’ younger brother Daemon. Of course, the moment everyone gets comfortable with how things work in the Red Keep, House of the Dragon throws a curveball and jumps ahead 10-ish years to when Rhaenyra, Alicent, and Daemon all have children of their own.

Rhaenyra has been a dragonrider since she was a child and her dragon is named Syrax – we see the two together when they land on Dragonstone to confront Daemon in episode 2. Aemma, played by Sian Brooke, is married to Viserys and mother to Rhaenyra. She has suffered several miscarriages trying to give Viserys a son, and she dies giving birth to another boy, Baelon, in episode 1. When House of the Dragon kicks off, Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine, is the king of Westeros. He's Rhaenyra's father and Daemon's older brother and he was chosen to succeed his grandfather King Jaehaerys to the throne by the Great Council.

Following Aemma’s death, Viserys marries Alicent Hightower (played by Emily Carey as a younger woman), a girl only a few years older than Rhaenyra herself. There were some major deaths, a heartbreaking birth, and plenty more dramatic moments as the Rhaenyra learned of the ongoing treason in King's Landing.
